About the Metaverse and the near future of the construction industry

The name Metaverse, which has recently been heard in various media, is a coined word that combines two English words: Meta (exceed) and Universe (universe). The word originally appeared in science fiction novels in the 1990s, and refers to a virtual world created in digital three-dimensional space in contrast to the real world. At the time, it was an imaginary world that was impossible to implement, but with the rapid development of modern technology, it has suddenly become a reality.
In the construction industry, by converting site conditions into data in real time and creating a digital twin that is reproduced in a digital three-dimensional space, productivity can be improved by using it for training new employees, simulating efficient construction plans, etc. Attempts to connect have begun.
In addition, due to the effects of the new coronavirus infection, it has been difficult to go out for a long time, so we have recreated commercial facilities, exhibition facilities, etc. in digital space, attracting customers there, serving customers, conducting business negotiations, and signing contracts and purchasing. There are also services that can guide you through the process.
Currently, most of the advances are in the construction of VR (virtual reality) that is compatible with specific sites and facilities, and in the use of AR (augmented reality) to display digital characters in real space. But that's just the beginning. Metaverse has the idea of creating another world, and has the potential to create a new city itself in digital space where you can work, play, shop, and travel. In the near future, the role required of the construction industry may change significantly.
